Sypherd, Lundgren will deliver commencement addresses

Saturday will mark the end for 4,321 UA students' university careers as they receive their degrees.

The ceremony will take place at the McKale Center, 1 National Championship Drive, with the degree procession beginning at 9 a.m. for the first session of graduates and 1:30 p.m. for later session.

Featured speaker for the morning ceremony is UA senior vice president of academic affairs and provost, Paul Sypherd. The speaker for the afternoon procession - as well as recipient for an Honorary Doctor of Law degree - will be Terry J. Lundgren, president and chief merchandise officer of Federated Department Stores, Inc. since 1997.

Lundgren received his undergraduate degree from the UA in 1975, and in 1990 was named chairman and CEO of Neiman Marcus. In addition to other charities, Lundgren has donated academic scholarships, student-career and faculty development funds to the UA's Retailing and Consumer Studies program.

The Alumni Achievement Award will be given to Miley Gonzalez, the present undersecretary of the U.S. Department of Agriculture and a UA alumnus.

Joan Kaye Cauthorn will also be presented with the same award.

Cauthorn wrote a book, "Successful Private Practice," and was the founding president of Employee Risk Management and an active participant in the community for two decades in the areas of politics, business, education, the arts and mental health.

The third recipient of the Alumni Achievement Award is James E. Rogers.

Rogers donated $100 million in 1998 to the UA College of Law. This gift marks the largest single donation to higher education made by an individual in the state of Arizona.

In November 1998, the college was named the James E. Rogers College of Law.

He is a 1960 and 1962 UA alumnus in the College of Law and currently owns and operates nine television and radio stations in the West.

The Alumni Association's final award in the area of Distinguished Citizen will be given to John W. Molina.

Molina worked as a counselor and health educator in Guadeloupe before receiving a medical degree from the UA College of Medicine in when. In 1995, Molina opened a free health clinic, the Las Fuentes Health Clinic in Guadeloupe.

Student awards will be given to six seniors.

The Robie Medal will be presented to Jonathan Shackman and Lindsay Galbut.

Shackman will graduate with degrees in chemistry, biochemistry and molecular and cellular biology. He has served as a resident assistant for three years and has also been active at a Mexican orphanage.

Galbut will be graduating with a degree in marketing from the Eller College of Business and Public Administration. She is the founder of the Muralcles program, which delivers art, music and murals to children in local hospitals.

The Nugent Award will be presented to Francisco Aguilar and Tara Kelly.

As well as serving as the ASUA president in 1999-2000, Aguilar will receive a bachelor's degree in finance and accounting from the Eller College of Business and Public Administration.

Kelly will receive degrees in Spanish and molecular and cellular biology on Saturday. She is a volunteer at numerous hospitals in Arizona and plans to attend medical school.

The Freeman Medal Award winners will be presented to Oscar Serrano and Davi Paletz.

Serrano was one of four students accepted in the summer of 1998 to the Mayo Minority Scholars Program at the Mayo Clinic. He will receive a degree in biochemistry and molecular and cellular biology. Serrano has also been published in the American Journal of Physiology and in Bioscience Reports.

Paletz, also a member of the UA track and field team, was active in the Smith project, which provided UA athletes the opportunity to interact with the community.

She will receive a degree in molecular and cellular biology and a bachelor of health science in physiology.

In total, 3,155 undergraduate degrees, 707 master's degrees and 163 doctoral degrees will be presented.
