Italian eatery is a step up from traditional fare
With a featured dessert of strawberries and cream called the Pope's Pillow combined with an elegant atmosphere, the owners of one of Tucson's premiere Italian restaurants must be wondering why His Holiness hasn't dropped in for some rigatoni. Upon walking into Trattoria Pina, 5541 N. Swan Road, one notices a unique ambiance characterized by drapes hung creatively from beams in the ceiling and topped off by a breath-taking view of the mountains and outdoor dining patio. Despite Trattoria Pina's beautiful atmosphere, the first taste of warm focaccia bread and olive oil, which is served before every meal, should dispel any suspicions that the food won't be able to measure up. While the dinner prices are best for mom and dad's credit card during Parents' Weekend, the lunch menu is reasonably priced. Even at $12-$14.95 for a pasta dinner, the portions are generous and having leftovers for lunch is always a good thing. One recommended entre is the rigatoni mixed with salmon, roasted red peppers, asparagus and a vodka cream sauce. At $8.95, this dish is about the most lire anyone could possibly spend for a lunch meal - and it's well worth it. All other pasta dishes and salads on the lunch menu are moderately priced at around $6 or $7. Also available are gourmet pizzas and calzones, inexpensive options for lunch or dinner. Trattoria Pina serves up much more than the traditional ravioli with meat or marinara sauce. Nearly every dish is complimented by an array of vegetables or topped with chicken, shrimp or salmon. And if anyone could possibly save room for an after-dinner treat, a waiter will be more than happy to bring around the tray of unique desserts - including the infamous Pope's Pillow. Trattoria Pina's menu can be found on-line at www.trattoriapina.com.
