Cheating omnipresent in today's classrooms

By Danny Mandel
Arizona Daily Wildcat,
September 28, 1999

To the editor,

I was happy to see the column in today's edition of the Wildcat regarding the possible expulsion of students caught buying term papers over the Internet. It seems that the administration responsible for the Grand Canyon catastrophe in the middle of campus has finally gotten something right.

The types of students who would perpetrate such a moronic act do not deserve to remain at our esteemed academic institution. Even the Neanderthals who drive the SUVs and live in the special beer-chugging houses (read: Greek life) know enough not to use a paper that can be traced back to them. Instead, they prefer to "recycle" old papers that have already been turned in and graded, thus making the cheating much more difficult to trace.

In my four semesters at this university, I have bore witness to cheating in virtually every class I have attended. Students who cheat make a mockery of those who try their best to educate themselves. It is about time our university got tough on cheating and restored even the slightest bit of meaning into receiving a college diploma.
