McGrath not a threat to UA
To the editor, In response to so many letters about Representative McGrath, I will try to clear up some things in order to put everyone at ease. Actually, this will be a little lesson in Politics. In the United States, we elect people to represent us. Contrary to some beliefs the United States is not a direct democracy. We as citizens vote for people to represent us. There are two levels of representation, the state level and the national level. In case some are worried Representative McGrath's views will be passed into a national law-you can rest easy and stop voicing your opinion in the Arizona Daily Wildcat. Representative McGrath is a state representative whose constituents are in Glendale. For those of you who are not familiar with the geography of Arizona, Glendale is near Phoenix. So in other words, Representative McGrath doesn't even represent the people here at the UA, NAU, ASU, or even in Tucson for that matter. Here in Tucson we have our own representatives to the Arizona house. Those that represent us are Rep. Herschella Horton, Rep. Marion Lee Pickens, and Rep. Ruth Solomon. If you feel a need to voice an opinion why don't you try telling them how to vote if McGrath's words actually make it into a bill. Oh and by the way, if Representative McGrath authored a bill, and it made it out of committee and on to the floor of the house for debate, her bill would have to pass through both the state house and senate, and then be ratified by Governor Hull. That is quite a task, seeing as how many people do not share her viewpoints on co-ed dormitories. There are two other major institutions of learning in the state of Arizona, Arizona State University and Northern Arizona University. They also have representatives in those congressional districts that would also vote on whether or not Representative McGrath's views would become law. But wait. That is getting ahead of things isn't it? Representative McGrath has not even authored a bill to end co-ed dormitories in state funded schools. To make sure there is no confusion, let's sum things up. Representative McGrath represents a constituency in Glendale, not Tucson. She is one member of the Arizona House of Representatives, with only one vote. She has not introduced a bill or measure that would end co-ed dormitories in state funded schools in Arizona. Representative McGrath has done nothing but say a few words in a couple of speeches. In other words she has done nothing to take away co-ed dorms! She has very little power to do anything. If you still feel like writing about Representative McGrath why don't you write to the constituents of Representative McGrath and tell them not to re-elect her in the next election, and stop filling space in the Daily Wildcat.
