I know there is supposed to be a separation of church and state, but to some people like myself, college football is a religion. So, here is a prayer of gratitude to my favorite saint, Dennis Northcutt:

Dear St. Dennis,

First of all, thank you for attending the University of Arizona. Your contributions to the team have been noted since your freshman year when you played defense and special teams. Your conversion to wide receiver was a godsend.

This year, you have almost single-handedly held the Arizona offense together. With all of the injuries the team has suffered, you have stood strong and persevered. You draw double and triple-teams, yet you overcome them to make amazing catches. Every game you have played this year, you've kept us in. The TCU game, you basically won by yourself, with a little help from the defense at the end.

Even though there have been a few letdowns this year, you seem to never get down, and you always play at the same All-American level.

You lead the team in receiving, punt returns, scoring and all-purpose yards. What would the squad do without you this year? You play offense, special teams and now defense. The funny thing is that you are the team's best cornerback after only two weeks of practice.

I don't doubt that you will lead the team in interceptions after the next game. The only way that you can be rewarded is with a trip to the Rose Bowl or by winning the Heisman Trophy. That award is up for grabs now with Mr. Retail out of the way, and no player in the country is more important to his team than you are. But that is in the hands of the almighty. Hopefully he sees you in good favor like all of the students at Arizona do.

Thank you for saving the Arizona football team from having a deplorable season. You have been the catalyst to the team's "rebirth." With the effort that the whole team showed last week, maybe they can build on the momentum that you generated. Don't let the team overlook the Miners on Saturday, though. The last thing we need is another letdown. I know you won't let that happen.

You are a pleasure to watch, and you inspire many with your athleticism and talent.

Thanks again,

Mike

P.S. Please give my regards to St. Keith, St. O.J., St. Marcus and St. DaShon.

P.P.S. Tell St. Mark to keep his head up. One down, hopefully many to go.
