Men's golf team makes improvement, still finishes 15th
The University of Arizona men's golf team finished last at the Taylor Made Red River Classic, which ended Tuesday at the Dallas Athletic Club. After a disappointing first and second round, the Wildcats improved in round three to shoot a 278, though they were still too far back to make up any ground. Assistant Coach John Knauer was pleased with the way the Wi.ldcats fought back in the third round, where they shot a 10-under-par. UA finished at 4-under-par 860, finishing in 15th place. "I was pretty pleased (with the third round), but it was not enough to make up for the low scores in the first two rounds," Knauer said. Oklahoma State won the tournament with an amazing score of 51-under-par 813 beating out South Carolina in the final round by three strokes. Individually, South Carolina's John Bloomfield won the tournament with a 19-under-par beating out Tulsa's Martin Maritz by two strokes. UA freshman Pat Norris had an upper body injury and had to withdraw in the first round. Norris recovered from the injury and battled back with some gutsy play to shoot a 68 in the third round. The Wildcats' top golfer was freshman Ricky Barnes, who tied for 26th in the tournament with a three-round total of 5-under-par 211 (69-73-69). UA's All-American golfer, senior Derek Gillespie, tied for 39th due to a poor second round score of 77. Also finishing for UA was senior Scott Moore tied for 49th at even-par while sophomore Cody Beyer tied for 77th at 9-over-par. "Right now our team is young and inconsistent, and what the team needs is more experience due to the fact that two freshman play in each tournament," Knauer said. The men's team will be back out on the course in competition tomorrow and Saturday at the Fresno Classic in Fresno, Calif.
