Consumers name UMC, TMC Tucson's top hospitals facilities

Tucson residents recently named University Medical Center and Tucson Medical Center the top hospitals in the Tucson area, according to the National Research Corporation, a health care measurement group.

This is the first time UMC has won the Consumer Choice Award, while TMC was bestowed with the achievement for the fourth time.

Katie Riley, a hospital spokeswoman, said the reaction around UMC was "surprising delight."

"We're all very pleased that our hard work is paying off in the public's perception," she said.

The Nebraska-based company surveyed consumers in 101 markets around the country. UMC and TMC are two of the 126 hospitals that were chosen for the award. This is the fourth year the research group has been distributing them.

Riley said UMC is content with the award, but the hospital will continue to increase the quality of care.

"We're just very glad the people of Tucson have chosen us this year for the quality care we offer," she said. "We're going to keep what we're doing, but we're always looking for ways to improve."

TMC spokesman Mike Letson said the award did not come as a surprise to the hospital's employees.

"For some extent we've gotten used to it," Letson said. "It's not startling, astounding, but we still appreciate it."

"It's always gratifying to get the vote from the public," he added.
