alternative serene

Bothered by the noise of obnoxious college students sake-bombing their way into de-tox? Try Sachiko Restaurant at 101 N. Wilmot for some of the best Japanese cuisine available in Tucson. This sushi-centric establishment offers about as serene of an atmosphere you can receive in a shopping center restaurant, while offering extremely competitive prices and above average service. There are no teppan grills, no outrageous bar bills, just damn good food.

I recently visited Sachiko and was surprised at the amount of bang they give you for your buck. Usually, I would pay somewhere around five dollars for an average roll of sushi and around three dollars for a single piece. I ordered two California Rolls (6 well-stuffed pieces) which ran me $4.00 a roll and four pieces of eel which cost $3.75, per order of two. My meal came to a grand total of $16.48 and it included both miso soup and cucumber salad that would normally cost you an extra five dollars at any other restaurant.

There was no noise except for the conversations at the adjacent tables and the occasional ring of a cell phone. We were greeted with prompt service and our food was freshly prepared at the sushi bar. The chefs were extremely friendly, maintaining conversation with their patrons throughout their meals. This makes the experience all the more worthwhile and is something I have had trouble finding in Tucson.

If you like Japanese food minus the hype of having it cooked on a grill by a chef who throws knives, Sachiko is the place for you. They even host a karaoke night during the week in order to compensate for the lack of teppan tables and drink specials. Give them a call at 886-7000.
