The UA women's basketball team opened up its season Sunday night with the Red and Blue Scrimmage, which pitted Wildcat against Wildcat to give UA fans their first glimpse of the 1999-2000. The Blue squad won the game, 69-51.

Leading the way for the Blue team was sophomore forward Elizabeth Pickney, who led all scorers with 17 points, 14 rebounds and two blocked shots. Also for the Blue team, senior guard Felecity Willis scored 13 points and had eight assists, while sophomore guard Julie Brase scored 11 points.

The Red team's effort was highlighted by senior forward Tatum Brown who notched 12 points and pulled down 18 rebounds.

Also contributing for the Red team was senior guard Monika Crank, who added eight points, and senior forward Angela Lackey and freshman guard Krista Warren, who each scored seven.

Associate Head Coach Denise Ianello, who has led the Blue team to an 8-0 record in the annual scrimmages, said the game helped the players prepare for their upcoming showdown with the Czech Republic. "I thought that both teams played hard," she said. "We wanted to focus on playing hard on defense and rebounding, and by and large, both teams displayed this."

The defense effort was certainly evident as the Red and Blue teams combined for a total of 51-of-145 field goal shooting while collecting 62 rebounds on the evening.

Arizona faces the SBC Prerov Czechoslovakia team on Friday, Nov. 5 in the first exhibition game. Arizona travels to Hawaii to open the regular season in the Hawaiian Regent Classic on Friday, Nov. 19.
