Cochise Residence Hall was evacuated early yesterday morning because of a dumpster fire south of the building. The cause of the blaze is unknown.

The hall's 180 residents evacuated the building, 1018 E. South Campus Dr., after a resident assistant called university police dispatch at 5:51 a.m. to report a dumpster on fire south of the hall.

The Tucson Fire Department responded about five minutes later and "pulled up a dumpster and extinguished it," according to Joe Gulotta, Tucson Fire Department spokesman.

The dumpster has been removed.

Cochise resident Adam Lawson, an economics junior, said there were a couple of false fire drills this year, but residents went safely across the street when they saw the fire.

"The blaze was about 15 feet in the air," he said. "The police officers went through two fire extinguishers before the fire department showed up."

The UA incident comes after a dorm fire that killed three students last month at Seton Hall.
