Winning five out of six matches, the UA men's tennis team fought their way to a 6-1 victory against Utah yesterday at Robson Tennis Center.

The blowout score wasn't indicative of the afternoon, as both teams scrapped throughout the singles and doubles matches.

The No. 60 Wildcats came out and took two out of three from the Utes in the doubles.

The second-seeded duo of senior Alex Brown and freshman Tom Lloyd opened with an 8-6 victory over the Utes.

Sophomores Caleb Marquardt and Michel Stopa, the third-seeded UA doubles team, clinched the doubles with an 8-5 win.

"Our doubles have improved overall, especially with different teams coming up strong over the weekend," Stopa said.

In singles competition, UA rolled through the Utah lineup, winning five out of six.

Junior Alex Aybar, from the No. 1 position, downed Ashley Dyer 7-5, 6-1.

Stopa's come-behind victory against Trevor Ferguson 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 became the turning point for UA.

"He (Ferguson) had huge serves in the first set," Stopa said.

"But starting the second set, I gave myself permission to go for the bigger shots."

Freshman Tom Lloyd and Brown each followed with wins in straight sets, both winning 6-4, 6-2.

Stopa said he was enthused about the recent play of the team, which has won three-straight matches and 15 out of the last 18 singles pairings.

"I'm proud of them," Stopa said. "They're doing a good a job as all of them are tough and fighting."

The team improved to 3-2 overall (0-2 in Pac-10) and takes on No. 67 San Diego on Saturday.

The match-up, which will be held at Robson, begins at noon.
