Women close out 2nd year by losing two in Bay Area

The Wildcat women's soccer team finished its second season as a Division I program by being swept by California and Stanford.

Arizona (6-11, 1-6 in the Pac-10) lost 3-2 to Cal (8-9-1, 3-4) Friday and were blanked 4-0 by the ninth-ranked Cardinal (16-3, 7-0) Sunday in the first-ever meeting between the schools.

The Cardinal took it to the UA, outplaying them and outsmarting them to keep its undefeated conference record intact. The Wildcats dropped to the bottom of the Pac-10, finising the season at 1-6. Their only Pac-10 win came against USC.

Sophomore midfielder Rita Hermiz had a goal and two assists for the Cardinal. Stanford outshot Arizona 22-3, including a 13-1 margin in the second half. Cardinal goalkeepr Erin Bryla made two saves in recording her ninth shutout of the season. All four goals by the Cardinal were scored by different players.

UA backup goalkeeper Annie Freund saw limited action in replacing Jen Weibel at goal for the Wildcats. Weibel made her 29th consecutive start for the Wildcats in goal.
