Pineda powers softball in UA Classic

Arizona catcher Lety Pineda said she doesn't see herself as a power hitter, but New Mexico State would probably argue otherwise.

In the top of the first inning of yesterday's final game at the Arizona Softball Classic, Pineda came up with the bases loaded and promptly sent Roadrunner pitcher Dani Dunn's second offering into the bleachers in left.

The blast was her second home run of the year, and it propelled the Wildcats to a six-inning, 10-0 victory over the Roadrunners.

The pressure was on Pineda to produce runs all weekend after teams continuously walked UA cleanup hitter Jenny Dalton. In one game, Dalton was intentionally walked twice.

"It's some incentive," Pineda said. "It makes me feel like I have to prove myself."

No longer able to walk Dalton with the threat of Pineda in the five spot, Dunn started to pitch to Dalton in the second inning. The senior second baseman then reminded the Roadrunners why they began walking her in the first place when she smacked a two-run opposite field home run.

"I said Jenny's going to take one deep today and so is Lety," Arizona head coach Mike Candrea said after the game.

As prophetic as he was about his team's power, he surely could not have guessed what the Wildcats had up their sleeve in the bottom of the third.

With runners at first and second, New Mexico State leadoff hitter Andrea Benford lined a shot to Dalton, who caught the ball and flipped it to shortstop Michelle Churnock to double the runner off at second. Then, hearing the shouts from the 775 in attendance at Hillenbrand Stadium, Churnock threw the ball to first baseman Tiana Hejduk completing a triple play.

"I've never seen one in softball before," Candrea said. "I've seen one in baseball, but never that close."
