The Arizona women's club lacrosse team came away with two big wins this weekend beating Westmont yesterday 10-7 and the University of California at San Diego 9-6 on Saturday.

Arizona experienced some difficulty in putting away Westmont.

"They were a worse team than us so we played down to their level," head coach Matt Prout said.

In Saturday's game against UCSD Arizona trailed 5-4 at the half. The Laxcats picked up the intensity in the second half and outscored San Diego 5-1.

"We had opportunities in the first half that we didn't capitalize on," Prout said.

Jessica Deal had two goals and assists, and teammate Shannon Clark added two goals to lead Arizona.

Deal said the win took a lot of heart.

"We focused hard and kept up the intensity," Deal said.

Goalie Hope Wisneski had six saves in the contest.

The Arizona men's club rugby team concluded the weekend with two wins over Long Beach State and UCLA.

Yesterday, Arizona (6-4) trailed LBSU 3-0 early in the first half, but then the Wildcats scored 20 straight points to win 20-3.

Arizona didn't allow the 49ers any points in the second half, and UA defense stopped an attempt from the 49ers late in the second half.

"The forwards stepped it up today. They have been consistent all year," UA head coach Dave Sitton said.

Senior Tom Scholzen, junior Joshua Glaser, and freshman Christopher Kron each scored a try.

"We ran the ball really well and had a lot of confidence," Glaser said.

Friday, Arizona beat UCLA 15-12. Glaser said the game was closer than expected, adding that Arizona didn't play well.

Senior Chris Everett scored two trys in the contest.

The Arizona men's club lacrosse team beat Bates College in a slugfest 17-13 on Friday.

The Laxcats (2-0) were leading 11-6 when Bates made a run in the third period with four-straight goals to cut the lead down to one. But Arizona forced Bates into a turnover to keep the lead.

Sophomore Dave Ames scored two goals late in the fourth period to seal the win for Arizona.

The best goal of the night came when junior Josh Sfara assisted freshman Sam Morrison with a cross-crease pass that split the defense and allowed Morrison to score.

In the second period, senior goalie Justin Nels had to leave the game because of a penalty, but backup goalie Bill Steelman came in and played for one minute with a strained hamstring and got a save.

"It was the penalties that killed us," Al Brown, head coach at Bates, said.

The Arizona men's water polo team had a tough weekend at the 1996 Desert Duel Tournament in Tempe.

The Wildcats finished 1-2 in the 16-team tournament that featured some of the premier water polo teams in the nation. UA lost to the San Diego Shores 12-9 Friday as well as 12-7 to Vancover. On Saturday, the Wildcats defeated Wyoming 22-5.
