Cartoonist's tastes numb in comic

Editor:

This letter is concerning the March 26 comic strip, "Jock Strip," by Pierce Rivero.

Mr. Rivero, your comic strip that had a sketch (and a poor one at that) of Joe McLean and inferred he had no future, was distasteful, rude and unnecessary. I found this especially classless after he played a good game against Kansas with the stomach flu. What gives you the right to claim that his future has nothing in store for him? Maybe he hasn't led the Cats in points and rebounds, however, he has shown dedication and the willingness to make personal sacrifice for the team. He hasn't been on academic probation or disgraced the university by assaulting somebody (or a parking meter). He has worked hard, and from what I understand, has done anything and everything that Lute Olson has asked of him.

Furthermore, I was unaware that you are a professional basketball scout and know who is going to make it and who isn't. He may not make it to the NBA, but he could definitely make it in the European league or some other league and will probably make six figures after graduation. Are you going to make that much after school, doing something that you truly enjoy doing? In addition, how do you know that he doesn't have a respectable job waiting for him after he graduates? Just because someone is a student athlete, it doesn't mean they have no other skills than that of their chosen sport. I hope that the next time you pick up your pencil to draw a comic strip that you can think of something a bit more interesting and tasteful to write.
