'Incentives' less for Canadian crossings

Editor:

In her March 22 column, Paula Huff makes the startling observation that the Canadian border does not have "armed, sunglass-bespectacled officers to keep the foreigners out" from the U.S. Then she asks, "Why is this so?" One reason, Ms. Huff, may be that the Canada-U.S. border is a lot less sunnier than the Mexico-U.S. border is, and so most U.S. border patrol officers in Montana, North Dakota, and other northern states prefer to do their job without wearing shades. Another reason may be the fact that the gap between Canadian and American standards of living is much smaller than the gap between Mexican and American standards of living, which means there is less of an incentive for Canadians to try and sneak over the border than there is for Mexicans.
