Two UA hydrology students have been awarded the first two scholarships from the American Water Resources Association and the Richard A. Herbert Educational Scholarships fund.

The recipients, Seton Claggett, hydrology and water resources senior, and Julie Blue, a hydrology doctoral candidate, were selected from a group of 10 undergraduate students and 19 graduate students from universities across the country.

Stephan Nix, assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering at the University of Alabama and president-elect of the American Water Resources Association, said there were originally three stages in the selection process. However, in the end, it was only a two-stage process.

"The winners were just a cut above the rest, so a third stage was not needed," Nix said.

The two winners were granted a $1,000 scholarship in memory of Richard A. Herbert. Herbert is a UA alumnus.

Herbert, a 1973 College of Agriculture graduate, was also a member of the American Water Resources Association.

Claggett is involved in activities such as water chemistry and water policy within the Hydrology Department as well as taking part in the department's Undergraduate Committee.

Blue has concentrated her studies in the area of aquifer restoration. She is also chairwoman for the Hydrology Department's mentoring program for incoming graduate students.
