Students in a management information systems class are offering free tutoring to anyone enrolled in finite math this semester.

Bruce Hartman created the free tutoring service for his Productions and Operations Management class three semesters ago.

He said the service grew out of the need for tutors knowledgeable in creating computer spreadsheets with a program called Microsoft Excel. The spreadsheet program is part of the curriculum taught in finite Math 119.

The course teaching the spreadsheet program is required for all business students to achieve advanced standing, said math Professor Donald E. Myers.

A spreadsheet is a table of information that organizes rows and columns of numbers. The computer software makes it easy for students because it does all of the arithmetic for them, Myers said.

Hartman's class of 25 students is responsible for setting up, organizing and running the service, giving them the opportunity to experience first hand what running a business is all about, he said.

"You can't just sit in a class and learn (how to run a business)," he said. "This experience provides an actual flavor of working in conjunction with the class."

Carol A. Anderson, administrative secretary in the math department, said the tutoring program offers its services to about 600 students currently enrolled in 16 sections.

For students enrolled in finite math, the service is a free opportunity to get help with troublesome homework.

Jeanine Arico, MIS and operations management senior, is involved in the marketing section of the MIS 473b class. She said most students in finite math are freshmen and lack experience with the Excel program.

She said the tutoring service will start in about two weeks. Arico said she expects at least 160 students to use the service. Once the service starts, tutors will be available six hours each school day, Arico said.

The student tutors are just waiting for a facility to host their tutoring sessions, she said. Possible locations for the tutoring sessions are in the Park Student Union and the Center for Computing and Information Technology.
