The UA rugby team heads into a weekend series looking to match the energy of last Saturday's loss to defending national champion California.

The Wildcats return to conference play on Friday against San Diego. The Toreros come into Saturday's match with a 5-3 record. Arizona defeated San Diego last year and has won the last five meetings between the two schools.

On Sunday, Arizona takes on San Diego State. The series between the Wildcats and Aztecs is the team's second longest running rivalry, dating back to 1975. In last year's loss to the Aztecs, Wildcats' flyhalf Zach Harrison had to be carted off the field by an ambulance after a late hit in the endzone. Arizona head coach Dave Sitton said the hit was more of an assault than a rugby tackle. The league suspended San Diego State fullback Chris McCarty for 60 days for the foul.

The Wildcats have only five conference games remaining this season, making this weekend's games even more important.

Arizona has outscored its opponents 114-73 this season.

The game on Friday afternoon starts at 2:45, while Sunday's matchup begins at 12:30. Both matches are at Estevan Park, 1000 N. Main St., and both will be followed by junior varsity games. There is no admission charge. - Chris Reimer
