University police arrested a UA student on suspicion of drunken driving Friday after he crashed his car into a tree on North Santa Rita Avenue, police reports stated.

A patrol car swerved to avoid hitting a black 1990 Honda Civic as it crossed over the center line early Friday morning, speeding north on Mountain Avenue near East Mabel Street, according to reports.

Police followed the vehicle until the car swerved and hit a tree along Santa Rita Avenue.

The driver, whom police identified as Charles Clint Walker, 21, of the 900 block of East Second Street, stepped out of the car after the crash and approached the officer, who ordered him to get back into his vehicle, reports stated.

Police approached the vehicle and asked the five passengers to step out of the car. No one was injured, reports stated.

Walker admitted to drinking and told police he was returning home after visiting friends at the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity house, 1509 E. Second St., reports stated.

"I know I messed up," Walker told police, according to reports. "I freaked out because I want to be a real estate agent and you can't if you have a DUI."

Walker agreed to take a voluntary field sobriety test, and his blood alcohol content was 0.210 percent, reports stated. Walker told police he had about seven beers.

Police placed Walker under arrest at 3:02 a.m. and took him to university police headquarters. He was later released.

University police responded to Apache-Santa Cruz Residence Hall early Saturday morning after a resident reported smelling the strong odor of marijuana from a third-floor room.

Officers went to one room of the hall at 1420 E. Fifth St. about 1:30 a.m., but only noticed the aroma of pizza.

The resident then told police to check a second room, where the smell of marijuana was evident, according to police reports. The room's resident, later identified as Richard Cullen West, 18, opened his door, releasing an even stronger marijuana smell, reports stated.

West denied smoking any dope, but admitted to smoking a cigarette. Police told West to stick his tongue out, which revealed a "green film," police reports stated. West told police he had no marijuana in his room and said he didn't want police looking through his "stuff."

The officers became suspicious when they noticed an additional driver license in West's wallet, which officers determined to be a phony Virginia's driver license, reports stated.

Police again asked West if he had marijuana in his room. He then opened his desk drawer and produced a small plastic bag containing a green, leafy substance, reports stated.

The officer then asked West what he used to smoke the substance with. West voluntarily gave police a pipe, reports stated. Three items - the pipe, bag and license - were confiscated.

West was cited and released. The pipe and bag were sent to the state Department of Public Safety laboratory.

A UA freshman was found unconscious in front of the Memorial Student Union, 1303 E. University Blvd., late Saturday night.

Police responded to the call at 11:28 p.m. Once he came to, the student told police he blacked out and didn't remember how he got to the Union.

Police received the call from a man watching his dog on the UA Mall. The student told police he remembered seeing a man with a dog but did not know he was the one who reported the incident.

The student asked police a number of times where he was found and explained to them that he could not seem to retain any short-term memory, reports stated.

The student sustained a small abrasion on his cheek, and after being taken to the University Medical Center, was told he had also sustained bruises.
