Want a say in who's the best at the UA? Then volunteer your time for the Staff Advisory Council Employee Recognition Steering Team. They are looking for staff, faculty, appointed professionals and students to act as judges and choose the winners of the 1999 Billy Joe Varney Award, the UA Staff Awards for Excellence and the UA Team Award for Excellence. If you work well in groups and can keep a secret, this could be for you. Susan Beltran can give you the details at 621-4037.

Today is your chance to relive your childhood in an acceptable adult manner! Join Mabel Dean of FEMAIL and Wild Stage Press for the Pop-Up and Movable Book Exhibit Event: Hands-On Demonstration in the lobby of the Special Collections Library. "Playing with Pop-Ups," an event designed to teach you how to make your very own pop-up book, will take place at 10 a.m. and is not intended for children. (Grown-up amusement only, for once!) Bring your own scissors, please - paper, glue and the like will be provided. Contact James T. Sinski at 621-4300 for more information.

Instead of attempting to sell your old clothing to trendy "thrift" stores who probably won't buy it if it's not in immaculate condition (designer label intact), why not bring it to campus? The class of Retailing & Consumer Studies 384 is sponsoring a Food & Clothing Drive for Hurricane Mitch Survivors from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today on the Mall. Get rid of the dust-collecting part of your wardrobe and that can of creamed corn and help humanity all in the same few minutes. Call Michelle Nelson at 690-9262 for details.

Parting is such sweet sorrow: Today marks the last day of the Building Academic Community Speaker Series. Take your favorite seat in Gallagher Theatre at 12:15 p.m. this today to hear Judee K. Burgoon (professor, Department of Communication) talk about "Deception Games and Virtual Worlds" until 12:50 p.m. Give Sue Robison a call one last time at 621-4700 for further information.

Did you know that, in the state of Arizona, you can be a substitute teacher with a B.A. in anything?! If taking over someone's class for a few days sounds like a good way to make some money and gain experience, come to the Substitute Teacher Fair from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Senior Ballroom of the Student Union. Career Services is sponsoring this event, which will allow you to sign up as a substitute with school districts, network locally, and gather more information on this type of job. Contact Susan Miller at 621-1408 for the specifics.

Rifling through the classifieds pages in the newspaper may be a good start to beginning your career, but scanning the Internet can be quicker (and cleaner). Learn how to avoid newsprint-ink stains and still nab a job at the Internet Job Search Workshop. Offered by Career Services, this event will be held in Room 104 of Old Main from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Snag one of the few remaining spots by signing up at the career Services reception desk. Carol Zick has more information for you at 621-6508.
