Formal attire not required: The Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology will be holding an Informal Seminar this morning in room 413 (Michod lab) of the Biological Sciences West building. Sergey Gavrilets (University of Tennessee) is still with us here in quaint Tucson and would like to share his views on "Splitting patterns of subdivided populations," tie or no tie. "Splitting": Adjective? Verb? See for yourself. Or, if the suspense is too great, call 621-1588 and ask Susana Noriega-Edmond.

Older than the guitar and more versatile than the kazoo, the basic drum (if one may generalize a bit) has been a mainstay of almost every culture's musical tradition. See how the American conception of percussion measures up to the Hispanic expression at today's continuation of the Drums Across Cultures event. Nahui-Ollin Grupo Azteca de Tucson will give you a taste of the flavor of musical diversity this afternoon from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. on the grassy knoll - I mean, the Mall. The group is performing thanks to the combined efforts of the Department of Multicultural Programs and Services and Chicano/Hispano Student Affairs. What's scheduled for the remainder of the week? Call Olga Carranza at 621-1094 for program information.

If someone asks a UA student who takes care of his or her medical issues, most will probably answer "my parents." However, the responsibility extends far beyond who foots the bill. Find out what's going on in health care at today's Arizona Prevention Center Presents lecture. Stuart J. Cohen, EdD. will give you an overview of "Health Promotion and Disease Prevention: Involving Health Care Providers, The Public and Community Organizations" from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Kiewit Auditorium of the Arizona Cancer Center. Smart man, that Mr. Cohen - he is a candidate for the Canyon Ranch Endowed Chair in Lifestyle and Behavioral Health speaks for itself. For more information concerning the talk, call the Arizona Cancer Center at 626-6044.

It was written in the stars (or perhaps, the dirt): Duane Griffin (Northwestern University) has invited you to gossip about a date between destiny and science this afternoon at the Geography and Regional Development Colloquium. Find out how the two hit it off when Griffin discusses "Complex Systems, Spatial Structures, Cruel Fate and Dumb Luck" from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. in room 208 of the Harvill building. Sharon Johnson has the juicy details at 621-1652.

It may only be the beginning of the semester, but many of us are already feeling a bit overwhelmed by our course workloads. Though chemically altering your state of mind may provide temporary relief from the trials and tribulations of academia, there are less dangerous (and less expensive) ways to beat tension. Interested? Then come check out The Power of Mindfulness-Based Stress-Reduction, a free presentation on how yoga, focused breathing, and other activities can ease your work-weary mind. Be at the Health and Wellness Center of the University Medical Center from 7 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. and listen to your mind's content. Contact Ginny Bonner at 694-2487 for additional information.
