A UA student, who UA bookstore officials said has sold back about $2,300 worth of books in the past six months, was arrested yesterday for stealing textbooks from the bookstore, reports stated.

Christopher Kensley, 23, of the 5000 block of North First Ave., stole six textbooks from the UofA Bookstore, 1209 E. University Blvd., totaling $561, reports stated.

Among the books stolen were Urban Transportation and Planning, $77.50; Foundation of Microbiology, $117.50; and Physics for Scientists and Engineers, $117.50, reports stated.

Police read Kensley his Miranda Rights, arrested him for misdemeanor theft, handcuffed him and searched him. Police found $61 in cash in Kensley's front pocket, and he laughed and said, "that's the money I got for those other two books today" but did not give any further information, reports stated.

Two students who witnessed the theft agreed to complete written statements for the police. They said they saw Kensley moving throughout the store with a couple of books in his arms that would "disappear" after Kensley moved around corners and rows of the store, reports stated.

Security guards at the bookstore watched Kensley carry six textbooks out of the front doors of the bookstore without stopping at a register. Kensley was detained by bookstore security and escorted to the bookstore offices to wait for police, reports stated.

Kensley admitted that he has been stealing textbooks and selling them back. The bookstore had records showing Kensley has sold back about $2,300 worth of textbooks since September, reports stated.

Kensley said he got the idea to steal and sell back books when he was selling back his own books, reports stated.

The UofA Bookstore office is comparing information with Rother's Bookstore, 501 N. Park Ave., and another local bookstore for a possible connection in thefts. This information will be presented to the UAPD for additional criminal charges, reports stated.

Kensley was informed that he is no longer welcome at the bookstore and that store staff would press charges for trespassing if Kensley returned, reports stated.

A UA student sent several harassing instant messages to another UA student yesterday.

Messages including "now ur fucked" and "there is no way out of it... ur gonna fucking get it" were sent to a female student's computer from a male student, reports stated.

The woman said she met the man at school orientation in August. The two students had spent a lot of time together, but she became uncomfortable around him after an incident when he asked her to "get on the bed" with him, reports stated.

In addition, racial slurs in messages, such as "dumb wannabe white piece of shit jap" and "fucking poor excuse for a walking good twat... gook" were shown to police by the female student, reports stated.

The female student said that she has been contacted at least 20 times between August and December by the male student, reports stated.

Police met with the male student, and informed him that he could be arrested if he continued to make contact with the woman. The student said he understood and would not make further contact, reports stated.

The woman said she was afraid of the other student, but did not wish to prosecute for harassment. She only wanted the other student to leave her alone, reports stated.

A Tucson man was arrested yesterday for possession of drug paraphernalia and an existing UAPD warrant.

Jeremy O'Brien, 27, of the 300 block of East Alturas Street, was sleeping at a self-service laundry at 1108 E. Sixth St. when police officers arrived at the scene, reports stated.

Officers handcuffed O'Brien after finding and confirming a UAPD warrant for his arrest, reports stated.

When O'Brien was asked by police if he had any contraband or weapons, he said there was one needle in his left front pocket and other needles in his left front coat pocket that he used for heroin, reports stated.

Police also found a cut soda can bottom in his left front coat pocket, reports stated.

O'Brien was placed in the rear seat of an officer's patrol car and transported to Pima County Jail, reports stated.
