Justin Wessel put on probation, according to assistant coach Jim Rosbourgh
UA men's basketball forward Justin Wessel was charged with driving under the influence and driving the wrong way on a one-way street early Thursday morning, according to University of Arizona police reports.
He was arrested at a Greyhound bus stop on South Fourth Ave., UA police department reports stated.
Wessel, a communication senior, pulled out of Dirtbag's, 1800 E. Speedway Blvd., in a gray 2000 Nissan Altima with three other males. They were on their way to a party on North Euclid Avenue and East Ninth Street when they were stopped five minutes later, reports stated.
Officer David Niebla first heard male voices yell at a pedestrian northbound on North Euclid Avenue. He followed the car as it drove in the wrong direction on East Broadway Boulevard near South Fourth Avenue.
Wessel was moderately intoxicated - at 2:32 a.m. his alcohol level was at 0.075 and rose to 0.084 seven minutes later. The legal alcohol limit is 0.10 in Arizona.
His "eyes were red and appeared to be tired" when he stepped out of the car in a untucked T-shirt, baggy khakis and sandals, according to reports.
Adam Thrall, Dirtbag's bartender manager working that morning said Wessel didn't appear to be intoxicated.
"I saw some of his behavior, and he looked fine to me," Thrall, a UA media arts and English senior, said.
Wessel could not be reached for comment.
Mindy Claggett of Arizona Sports Information said basketball operations declined to comment but Jim Rosbourgh, UA men's basketball assistant coach, said action had already been taken against Wessel.
"We're aware of the incident, he was put on probation immediately," said Rosbourgh.
