CD Review: Buckcherry

Buckcherry

Time Bomb

(DreamWorks)

Grade: C-

Time Bomb is an album that explodes with music, but it does not set off any worthwhile lyrics for its listeners.

Buckcherry's new album is full of fun, upbeat, driving music that is set for a party atmosphere complete with beer and a possible Tucson riot. The entire album is dedicated to social deviance and excess. It is obvious from the titles of songs like "Whiskey in the Morning" and "Porno Star" that the main focus of the music is sex and drugs, all played out through rock & roll.

The group follows in the footsteps of its first album by playing fun music, but the first album's lyrics probed a bit more beneath the surface. Lead singer Josh Todd's lyrics sound like he got drunk and wrote the first thing that popped into his head, making crude references to his large genitals and his evenings filled with wild debauchery.

The repetition of songs about sex, alcohol and drugs becomes more and more annoying in each song. This point is proven by such deep lyrics as "Can't stop drinking, gonna die!" from "Whiskey in the Morning," and "blasphemy, sodomy, beat me up cause you like it baby," from Frontside.

Todd really starts to sound like Britney Spears with his relentless use of the word "Baby." Trying to rhyme that word over and over must be so tiring for a man - maybe he should take a few more swigs of whiskey and watch another porno. Or, possibly, Todd could use his brain and write something worth listening to.

Although Time Bomb boasts a coming explosion, the only bomb bursting on this record is the pathetic writing capabilities of this so-called "writer."
