Political intrigue and fury fill the stage at tonight's 7:30 International Arts Society film screening of "The Conformist" in the Modern Languages building auditorium. The 1969 Italian film examines the fascist regime and the party's ability to invade the lives of unsuspecting citizens. Poet and memoirist Quincy Troupe shares his love for words at tonight's 8 p.m. Poetry Reading Series in Harvill building, Room 150. The Poetry Center is proud to sponsor this reading which will feature excerpts from Troupe's novel "Weather Reports: New and Selected Poems and Miles and Me," chronicling Troupe's friendship with Miles Davis. The UA music and dance department combine personal tragedy and comic relief in tonight's 7:30 Opera Theatre presentation in Crowder Hall. The first opera, "Suor Angelica" sets a serious tone for the evening while the second Italian piece, "Gianni Schicchi" lightens things up with classic broading humor. This Weekend
The Flandrau Science Center takes their research outside with tomorrow's Astronomy Day celebration on the center's south lawn between 1 and 9 p.m. Star charts, meteorites and "Comet Rendezvous" demonstrations will cost $3 for adults and $2 for children. The celebration will continue to the UA Mall with a free Star Party at 7 p.m. Large telescopes and binoculars will be on hand to help keep a closer eye on the night sky. Something old meets something new on the Centennial Hall stage tomorrow night, as UApresents brings "Urban Bush Women" to Tucson at 8 p.m. Combining modern dance moves with traditional African American folklore, the company engages the audience with text-accompanying pieces such as "Hands Singing Song" and "Soul Deep to the Bone." Tickets for the event range from $16-$28 and can be purchased through the Centennial Hall box office at 621-3341.
Finish the weekend off with a relaxing Sunday matinee performance of the UA music and dance department's "Mildred Flood Mahoney Memorial Organ Concert." Prominent performer, Todd Wilson, will lead the orchestra in works by Johann Sebastian Bach, John Stanley, Marcel DuprŽ and UA organ professor Pamela Decker.
