New senate hopes to be 'more cohesive' than last year's body

Senators want to make club funding and student outreach a priority

The 2001-2002 ASUA senators will have their first meeting tonight at 6, and they don't expect too many disagreements.

Executive Vice President Sam Chang, who will oversee and chair all senate meetings, said yesterday that he felt the new senate was well prepared for its first meeting. The agenda consists of approving the vice presidential and presidential appointments, which some senators do not expect too much debate over.

After the senate retreat during the weekend of April 20, members of the new student government decided they shared a lot of the same goals for the year. The retreat was held in Heber in the White Mountains, and the senators and Chang were snowed in for one night.

"They are all on the same page on a lot of things," Chang said. "A lot of them had similar campaign promises. I think they will be more cohesive on a lot of issues than last year's senate."

He added that he is excited because he thought the new senate would accomplish a lot.

"Instead of having one senator really wanting to accomplish one goal, there are two or three who want the same thing," Chang said.

The main priorities the senators have in common are student outreach, club funding, ASUA accessibility and campus safety.

Sens. Jered Mansell and Gloria Macias said they realized at the retreat that it was going to be easy for the senate to work together because of the similar priorities.

Macias and Mansell said campus safety was one of their shared priorities, and they are looking forward to working with the rest of the senate.

"We are a friendly bunch," Macias said.

"We are really fun, excited people," Mansell added.
