Eastern Way provides new supervisor to complex, Res Life puts up funds to wash carpets

UA Residence Life is attempting to alleviate students' stress following complaints of unresolved maintenance issues at Sky View apartments.

Jim Van Arsdel, director of residence life, toured the apartments Friday with representatives from Eastern Way, the building's managing company.

"By the end of the tour, it was apparent that the scope of the problem was relative to what had been put down on paper," Van Arsdel said.

After viewing several of the Sky View apartments, 1050 E. Eighth St., residence life composed a list of the worst cases and the problems that still needed to be fixed.

Many students saw results from this meeting as early as Saturday morning, Van Arsdel said.

"They came in and fixed everything including the air conditioning filter, window and doorknob," said Nate Herse, mechanical engineering freshman. "They spent about two hours here and asked us what we needed."

Starting today, other students should see results from the increased maintenance staff promised by Eastern Way.

Residence Life proposed changes in the form of a letter distributed to residents late Friday afternoon.

"Based on the letter, it seems like they are trying to make up for some of the mistakes they have made," said Bethany Sobelman, undeclared freshman. "But I haven't seen any improvements yet."

The letter acknowledges various apartment problems by residence life and a list of improvements that will be made in the coming weeks.

Van Arsdel said that a number of problems occurring in the apartments is a result of the lack of efficient supervision.

Among the changes will be the addition of an on-site supervisor, Katy Paulin, a representative from Eastern Way.

In addition to the increase of maintenance staff, residence life plans on using its funds to wash carpets and upholstered furniture within the residents' units.

"A sign-up sheet will be available for the students starting early this week," said Van Arsdel. "We will do whatever needs to be done and worry about the funding later."
