UA swimmer awaiting Olympic debut

SYDNEY - Well, we are all in Sydney. It's kind of hard not to get caught up in the pre-Olympic hype.

There are dining halls that are open 24 hours a day, free McDonald's food, hundreds of free arcade games and having the opportunity to eat breakfast next to some of the greatest athletes known to man.

When I first got here I couldn't help but feel slightly overwhelmed. I have, however, settled in and the hype and free-stuff don't phase me anymore.

I am here on a mission.

It doesn't matter what happens though, I just really want to enjoy the experience of these Olympics.

Leading up to the Olympics I've been very focused. People often ask me if I am nervous or excited, but I think I am too focused.

I know exactly what I want and what to expect. I am here at just another swim meet, and I have a job to do.

Simple as that.

It's amazing, I've met people here from countries that I have never even heard of.

The athletes from these countries might not be the fastest or even possible medal contenders, but they all have unbelievable ambition and their own experiences.

I enjoy being able to meet these people and share in their experiences.

The people of Sydney and Australia are extremely friendly. Their enthusiasm for the games cannot be rivaled by anyone.

They are also there with a cheerful "G'day Mate" and always willing to lend a hand when necessary.

Swimming starts on the Sept. 16, and I am fortunate enough to have been allowed to bring my coach Rick DeMont along.

Practices have been going well and, as everyday goes by, I start feeling better and stronger in the water.

Whatever happens though, I am convinced that I will enjoy myself, and I realize that the only pressure on me right now is the pressure that I put on myself.

Regards,
