Students hesitant to accept check cashing service

CatCard office will now cash checks of $30 or less for students,

The new cash checks program instituted at the University of Arizona All-Aboard office has not been received well by students so far.

The office began cashing checks of $30 or less for students and employees with valid CatCards on Sept. 11. The policy is good for one check per day, per individual.

Catherine Dixon, a senior teller at the All-Aboard office, said they haven't had very many requests for this service.

"We probably have about one request a day for the check cashing service," Dixon said. "I think that may be because a lot of people don't know about it."

Signs have been placed in the All-Aboard office detailing the rules and requirements for checks accepted by the UA.

All checks must be from Arizona and made payable to the University of Arizona, Dixon said.

Amanda Tucker, a family studies sophomore, said she hadn't heard about the program, but probably wouldn't be using it any time soon.

"I would just use my ATM card if I needed money," Tucker said. "Besides, my ATM doesn't charge me 50 cents to get cash."

Although many students cite the half-dollar charge as a deterrent for using the pilot service, others feel the service isn't timely.

Adam Robitshek, an economics junior, said he feels that ATMs have replaced the need for this type of service.

"The majority of people who have checks have ATM cards," said Robitshek. "I don't think there is anyone these days without an ATM card."

One possible expectation of the office is that students will cash checks and ultimately bring more business to the Student Union, said Dixon.

However, Melissa Kittel, a sociology junior, doesn't think this is probable.

"I bank at DM (Federal Credit Union), and usually pay a dollar fee at other ATMs," said Kittel. "But I still think that is more convenient than coming downstairs, writing a check, and still only getting $30."
