Police here to protect

To the editor,

Although I have often disagreed with the editorial content of the Wildcat, I always recognized that your writers were thoughtful and articulate in expressing a worthy perspective on an issue. However, the utter lack of integrity and relevance that dominated the column entitled "What's with the hating?" has forced me to respond. First of all, I am having a difficult time understanding the title of this commentary...is the Wildcat suggesting that local police officers 'hate' the community they police? Surely, if Mr. Zeckets cared to actually research any police agency in the country he would find that police officers are committed to "serving" the public, and that protecting citizens is the ultimate goal of any peace officer.

May I remind you that the police are the same public servants who respond to prowlers in your backyard, or rush to the scene of someone who needs medical attention (sometimes even assisting paramedics save the life of an 18-year-old who has been bingeing all night, and needs to be taken to the hospital to be treated for alcohol poisoning.) Furthermore, although I may agree with Mr. Zeckets that an 18-year-old who can vote, or serve in the military, should be able to decide to drink a beer, that is a question for the legislature! And, based on the immaturity with which most college students use alcohol, I wouldn't expect a change to the drinking age any time soon. Police officers cannot be expected to enforce some laws...they are required to enforce them all. Don't like the drinking age? Write a letter to the Capitol. Finally, if the Wildcat would like to maintain the journalistic integrity that it once possessed, it's writers should at least make a token attempt at real journalism by using adult language and refraining from the use of bombastic and sophomoric rhetoric...calling police officers 'bacon-boys', or 'Nazis' undermines both the Wildcat, by reducing your columns to mere childish name calling, and fosters a dangerous disrespect for the police officers who have sworn an oath to protect your life and the laws of this state. May I remind you that a University police officer lost his life in the line of duty responding to a 'harmless' party, where fun-loving, intoxicated students were brandishing a firearm. Don't worry, Mr. Zeckets, our police officers will still be there for you when you need help...that's what they do, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, even at the cost of their own life... Perhaps you should aspire to the same level of integrity as they do.

Mother not irresponsible

To the editor,

Daniel Scarpinato seems to be living in a conservative utopia. In his little world, we can assume (making an ass out of you and me) that Misty would have remained a virgin through high school and until her wedding night, made dinner for her husband every night, gotten pregnant at carefully planned intervals, having a boy first and then a girl. Of course, she wouldn't have used birth control during these years, because then she would be like the other women screaming about their body, their choice. Since Misty would already be a housewife, she wouldn't have to quit her job to take care of the kids, her hubby would provide.

Failing that, Misty accidentally gets pregnant. Would Daniel have her have an abortion? Of course not. That would be immoral. Would Daniel vote for welfare programs to support Misty so she can stay home and lay out the children's clothes? No. That would be contributing to her immorality. Daniel, like most misogynist conservatives, would want her to wave her magic wand (wait, that would be immoral too) and be a virgin again, so as not to increase his tax burden by her very existence.

Misty has, as we all have, made choices that increased her burdens in life, but she is handling those burdens admirably. She will graduate and show her children what life has to offer, hopefully helping the next generation to make better choices. Judgments by those that know nothing about her life except one newspaper article don't help Misty or her children. But the support of this university and society as a whole will.

Death penalty appropriate

To the editor,

Certain students at your university have lost it. In our country we have thugs, criminals, murderers and rapists who need to be punished. Your university already has a club Amnesty, but why should there be a students against death penalty.

Families of the victims need a closure to their losses. How do you tell a mother who lost her daughter, that the murderer/rapist will only get a life sentence. Victim's families need justices, and monsters who kill innocent children, rape girls should be executed as prescribed by law.

Yet still you have a naive little group called the students against death penalty. I read the article earlier and was really sad to see college students doing something stupid. It is a shame that a former ASUA senator is helping the club.

Former Senator Ahmad Saad Nasim lied when he said he was influenced by an Islamic Proverb-when every Muslim nation has the death penalty. He has nothing better to do and needs to get involved in something. What could be more pathetic than an ex-ASUA senator still in school who lied about his faith and much more!

To the Students Against Death Penalty - your group is a shame to the University of Arizona.

Being a mother is the greatest honor

To the editor:

After reading Daniel Scarpinato's letter, I realize that many men are just a bunch of careless, chauvanist pigs who do not realize the pain, suffering, and sacrifices ALL mother go through when they give birth to a child. We cannot go back and change the past! Although, many a time there are unwanted pregnancies, women are not the only one responsible-but also the men who make them pregnant as well! Men don't go through labor, have periods, and have the ability to breast feed.

Daniel Scarpinato did not only insult Misty Dillon but damned every mother in the whole world. Personally I am very proud of Misty! I feel she is a great mother who wants the best for her children. Dan's right-KIDS COME FIRST.

That is exactly what Misty is doing. Her education will go a long way. Her getting a better job will ensure her kids having a better life, and probably all the way in the future where she ensure's her kids to go to college.

I can't believe in this country where there is a sense of equality among men and women that we would prefer a women taking care of her children and do not expect anything from fathers! I mean we have government programs to help welfare and moms getting minimun wage jobs, betting getting a college education is considered a sin. Education never stops. I am who I am because they way my mother brought me.

Being a mother is the greatest honor! Without mothers, men cannot exist. Although men help in the creation of children, it is the women who must bear the pain, the sacrifices, the weakness during pregnancy. Daniel, grow up and respect women around you.

To Misty Dillon keep up the good work as a student. Your education will not only help you, but your kids as well. Jerks like Scarpinato will always be around and reproduced in the future. Sooner than you know, you're children will grow up to learn about YOUR sacrifices, courage and goals, not the bashing of jerks.
