Tucson Police Department posted city ordinance violations at Jefferson Commons two weeks ago all around the property. Residents have cut up, torn down or painted over most of the red stickers.

Management says the complex won't be a "party" property

Jefferson Commons management is working with the Tucson Police Department to make it less of a "party" place, the complex manager said.

The complex, at 850 E. Wetmore Road, was tagged with 20 red stickers on light posts two weeks ago. The red tags are a violation of the city of Tucson code ordinances section 11-140, titled "unlawful loud or unruly gatherings."

Individual apartment windows, the swimming pool and the computer room were also tagged.

"We've actually asked the Tucson police to help us make sure this is a nice property," said Mary Garza, community manager for Jefferson Commons.

The residents, which are mostly University of Arizona students, have been complaining about living conditions.

In response to students' dissatisfaction, Garza said they will improve the apartment's atmosphere.

"This year, we're not going to have a party property," Garza said. "We want it to be a nice place to live without crazy parties."

She said the apartment residents aren't the problem.

"All and all, we have excellent residents, we're doing our best to keep out the outsiders," she said.

Garza said the residents aren't the cause of the tagging.

"Most of the problems are caused by people who don't live here," she said.

She couldn't identity if any of the outsiders were University of Arizona students or nearby residents.

There are 300 apartments in the complex, and 700 residents.

Sgt. Judy Altieri, TPD public information officer, said the department plans to "respond to calls with criminal activity, we're going to take necessary action."

Altieri said the red tags aren't a result of the crackdown against underage drinking.

"I wouldn't say we're doing more enforcement against underage drinking than past years," she said.
