Campus Life VP to field student concerns during ASUA meeting

Fall Ball update by Sen. Bailey, Senate plans to revise Women's Resource Center bylaws

Saundra Taylor, UA Campus Life vice president, hopes to address student issues at tonight's ASUA Senate meeting.

Taylor will attend the Associated Students' weekly meeting to discuss the various services Campus Life provides and to learn about student concerns through the Senate.

"In one sense, it's going to be an information session, but hopefully, it will also be interactive if the senators ask me questions," Taylor said.

Taylor said she plans to explain the issues facing the Residence Life program, such as finding room for freshmen residents and dealing with graduate student housing because of the recent closing of the UA's Christopher City complex.

Taylor will also discuss the possible expansion of the Student Recreation Center to Bear Down Gym.

The number of students using the center has increased over the years, Taylor said, so when the Freshman Year Center moves into the yet to be completed Integrated Learning Center, Bear Down may become the extension.

"Basically, I want to give a thumbnail sketch of various programs and find out what students are concerned about," Taylor said.

In other business, Sen. Matt Bailey will give his weekly Fall Ball update and will release the names of the directors and staff members. He will also announce the $1,000 sponsorships they have received.

"Our dream goal is to get $15,000 in sponsorships, both in cash and in kind," Bailey said.

The "in kind" sponsorships - donated items that will be used for prizes - are easier to get than the cash ones, Bailey said.

Bailey will also be discussing the theme of the event - "Moonlight Mystique," a Mardi Gras festival - and the cost of tickets. Pre-sale tickets will cost $19 per individual, $33 for couples, and $120 for a group of eight students.

"I encourage students to buy their tickets during pre-sale because the prices will go up," Bailey said.

The amount of tickets sold during the pre-sale period -which lasts from Oct. 9 to Oct. 21 - will determine the fate of Fall Ball, Bailey said.

If 350 tickets haven't been sold by the last day of pre-sale, Bailey will be forced to "pull the plug" on his project.

"I really don't want to have to pull the plug, but I will if we have to," Bailey said.

The "pull the plug" idea will be proposed by Sen. Jose Ramirez, and the senators will then vote on the plan, which will ensure that they will not lose more than $3,300.

Erick Negri, ASUA executive vice president, said the senators will also update the Women's Resource Center bylaws.

"We are trying to match the laws to what is happening in reality," Negri said.

The ASUA meeting will be held in the Tucson Room in the Memorial Student Union at 6 p.m.
