Haunted houses, club specials provide alternatives to trick-
Although this may come as a shock, trick-or-treating is somewhat out of the question these days for those who have passed their candy-collecting prime.
However, because many college students are not quite willing to accept this harsh, adult-like reality, the Wildcat has compiled a list of Tucson's Halloween events guaranteed to make even the most mature student feel like a kid again.
As if college students could not be any more deranged, the residents of Yuma Hall are hosting their annual Haunted Dungeon/Insane Asylum in the basement of their residence hall. Dungeon visitors can choose to pay their way into insanity with either $2 or two cans of food. Jen Iriye, a Yuma Hall resident and dungeon committee member, said all the food collected goes toward food bank and Ronald McDonald House collections. The dungeon will be open on Halloween from 8 p.m. to midnight.
Those looking for a good old-fashioned haunted house with the addition of several live performances should check out the 9th annual Nightfall at Old Tucson Studios. Otherwise known as the town of Nightfall, Arizona, Nightfall at Old Tucson Studios is home to the Goulliard Asylum for the Perpetually Insane and its equally demented leader Dr. Jebediah Hyde. Each Nightfall attraction relates in some way to the asylum and its maniacal doctor, including a live theatrical production at Goulliard Theater, a stunt show featuring Hyde and a tour of the Health Maintenance Office at Goulliard Asylum. Be sure not to miss the new "Haunted Krypt," featuring stunts and special effects, which is advertised as Nightfall's main attraction. Nightfall opens at 5 p.m. and runs through Halloween night.
Do you believe in magic? Look no further than the Asylum of the Mad Magician, rumored to be the largest haunted house production in Arizona. The creation, spanning the floor of the old Dillard's department store at El Con Mall, 3601 Broadway Blvd., is also open through midnight on Halloween. The cost at the door is $11 and all proceeds go to benefit La Paloma Family Services, the Health Foundation and March of Dimes.
No Halloween would be complete without witnessing a friend's attempt at the Monster Mash. Gotham and the New West, 4385 W. Ina Rd., are as good of an excuse as any to get down and funky on Halloween night. The clubs are hosting Twice the Fright on Halloween Night, an 18-and-over Halloween version of the clubs' weekly Phat Tuesday night. The clubs will be giving away $1,500 prizes to those with the best costumes. Cover charges range from $4 to $5 for those 21-and-up, and are $8 for those 18 to 20. Doors open at 9 p.m and close at 2 a.m.
