Brase has cast removed, but still out of action

Although she's just a freshman, Wildcat guard Aimee Grzyb impressed UA head coach Joan Bonvicini early Monday during the Red and Blue Game held at McKale Center.

Grzyb impressed the crowd by shooting a perfect 3-for-3 from three-point range in the first half.

"I think Aimee Grzyb has done pretty good," Bonvicini said. "I am really impressed with her."

Grzyb finished with 14 points along with four assists and two rebounds.

Although the San Jose, Calif., native was perfect from downtown in the first half, she only took one three-pointer in the second half.

Bonvicini said the freshman will just get better with time.

"She has really picked up things well for her first year, and she is a very heady player and very smart along with being unselfish," Bonvicini said. "I think the biggest thing for her to do now is to be a little more vocal, and that will come with time and with more experience. I think, additionally, we are going to see a lot of her this year."

UA junior guard Julie Brase - who is out indefinitely following surgery on her right wrist - will be out of action until doctors clear the Tucson native to compete.

Brase was in uniform at the Red and Blue Game but did not play.

"She's disappointed she hasn't played yet," Bonvicini said. "Were just waiting - she is not really allowed to do any full rehab yet."

Brase averaged 6.1 points along with 2.3 rebounds last season but has not been able to shoot with her right hand since the surgery because of severe pain.

"She's in a little bit of a splint, and when the doctor releases her, we will work through and get her going again," Bonvicini said.

Bonvicini said earlier this week that Brase is not allowed to shoot with her right hand.

"She is getting pretty good with her left hand, though," she said.

The Pacific 10 Conference coach's poll predicts the Wildcat women to finish fourth in the conference.

Stanford, Oregon and Southern California are expected to finish ahead of the Wildcats, which tied for second place in the conference with the Cardinal last season.

"I think we're definitely the underdog, because we are young and have a number of players that graduated," Bonvicini said. "But we're going to be OK - I'm going to make sure we are."

The Wildcats are coming off their best season in school history - finishing with a 25-7 overall record.
