Pop quiz: who knows why American Indians have such low retention rates? We don't know either, but you could find and let us know if you go to the Comparative Cultural and Literary Studies Colloquium Series to see Mary Jo Tippeconnic Fox speak about "Issues in Indian Higher Education." It may not sound terribly interesting, but you never know what you might get, so try it out. The lecture starts at 3 this afternoon in Harvill Room 332B. Call Adele Barker at 621-3608 for all the details.

If you're graduating in May you don't have much time left to take the Upper Division Writing Proficiency Exam. And chances are that if you haven't taken the test yet, you have no idea what to expect. So why don't you take less than two hours out of your day to get clue. There's a workshop today at 4 p.m. that analyzes UDWPE questions, time management during the test and offers hints on developing ideas and structuring you essay. The workshop is in Room 413 of Modern Languages. Karen Gutierrez can answer any questions if you give her a call at 621-4548.

Aw, aren't mushy couples great? Yeah right. But just in case you're one the types who loves lots of PDA, you need to stop by the Center for Creative Photography today. Mariana Cook will be on hand to discuss her exhibit "Couples," a series of portraits featuring famous couples. Cook will discuss her project from inception to the final book. The lecture starts at 5 p.m. so show up a little early since the CCP isn't all that big. Call the center at 621-7968 for more information.

It's The Last Emperor come to life. Or something sort of like that. Well, not really. Anyway, Iichiro Touyama, a Japanese professor at Aichi Prefectural University, will speak today on the conceptions of Japanese sovereigns as divine beings. Touyama will also discuss issues raised by the notion of imperial divinity in modern times. The forum is in the Physical and Atmospheric Sciences Room 201 at 7 this evening. Todd Brown can give you the lowdown if you call him at 621-5478.

We all know it's hard to grow up, but some people need to get a grip on things. There's no need to make movies about your childhood, but director Louis Malle has done just that. Malle's semiautobiographical film, "Au Revoir, Les Enfants," is based on Malle's memories of attending a Catholic boarding school in Nazi-occupied France, where Jewish students are enrolled at the school and disguised as gentiles. The film starts at 7:30 p.m. in the Modern Languages Auditorium.
