One student ejected, other very agitated following crash

Two cars driven by UA students collided just before 1 p.m. yesterday at East Speedway Boulevard and North Mountain Avenue - ejecting one of the drivers.

However, only minor injuries resulted, said Tucson Police Department Lt. Martin Moreno.

A Jeep Wrangler, eastbound on Speedway Boulevard struck the back, left side of a BMW as it completed a U-turn into the far-right lane of the street.

The Jeep spun and flipped, ejecting its driver to the sidewalk. The Jeep's driver suffered a head injury when he was ejected and was taken to University Medical Center. Officers poured Hydrogen peroxide on the sidewalk to clean the blood off afterwards.

The ejected driver was conscious after the collision, said Jay Cox, an adjunct English instructor who went to the scene of the accident when she heard sirens.

The other student involved in the accident, who was driving the BMW, was extremely agitated following the accident, Cox said.

"She didn't know what had happened, she was confused," Cox said.

The other driver was transported to the UMC on a spine board as a precaution.

"I wouldn't say they were minor," she said concerning the severity of the student's injuries.

At the scene, officers said they could not determine which driver was at fault for the collision because they had no way of know what color the light was or how fast the cars were moving.

Sgt. Judy Altieri, TPD public information officer, said last night she did not have any information on the students' identity or whether either of them were wearing seat belts.

East Speedway Boulevard was blocked off from North Park and Mountain Avenues for about 20 minutes.
