An unnamed Wildcat sports editor recently said "If Alec Baldwin can't make a relationship work, what hope do I have?" He's heard the news and perhaps so have you. Uber-couple Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger recently announced the end of their seven-year marriage, joining the ranks of other high-profile couples who have summarily proven that true love does not exist in Hollywood. Meg Ryan and Dennis Quaid. Ellen Degeneres and Anne Heche. Demi Moore and Bruce Willis. What hope, indeed, is there for the rest of us? So for all those that have lost that lovin' feeling, the Wildcat Arts desk recommends some classic break-up movies to ease the pain.
Starring the Russell Crowe appendage herself, "Addicted to Love" (1997) is a romantic comedy that centers around jilted lovers Maggie and Sam (Meg Ryan and Matthew Broderick, respectively) seeking revenge on their former flames. Through their mean-spirited attempts to break up their old lovers, the two find love. Once again, vengeance brings people together.
Also of interest is John Cusack's latest flick about breaking up (no one has been dumped more in film), "High Fidelity" (2000). Cusack stars as commitment-phobe Rob Gordon, a music store owner, who recounts his top-five break ups in this Stephen Frears comedy.
After his own marriage ended, Bruce Willis starred with Michelle Pfeiffer in Rob Reiner's "The Story of Us" (1999), a touching tale of the steady dissolution of a marriage. Punctuated by awkward silences and strained dialogue, the film wonderfully documents the end of a relationship.
Happy renting!
