Linda Ronstadt will perform at two UA School of Music and Dance fundraising concerts this weekend honoring award-winning composer Nelson Riddle's contributions to the university.

All proceeds from the sold-out concerts will benefit the UA's recording studio.

"This (money) will upgrade both the facility and its equipment," said James Taylor, assistant professor of jazz and director of nUAnce.

The University of Arizona Symphony Orchestra will accompany Ronstadt and nUAnce - a newly-formed 10-member jazz ensemble at the UA. Renowned flutist Paul Horn and percussionist Emil Richards will also perform at the concert.

"Most of the music we will be playing are Riddle's compositions, but I also included some of his arrangements of other pieces, especially Gershwin," said orchestra director Thomas Cockrell.

Ronstadt's appearance is sign of her gratitude for the university, said Rob Cutietta, director of the UA School of Music and Dance.

"Ronstadt recorded a Christmas record here last summer, and this performance is her way of thanking the school," Cockrell said.

Taylor sang in the chorus and in the jazz choir on Ronstadt's holiday album, A Merry Little Christmas.

Taylor said he looks forward to the concerts in a different context now that he is the director of nUAnce.

"(Ronstadt) brings such musicality to what she does," Taylor said. "(Ronstadt) has a wonderful voice, and working with her is a great learning opportunity for my students."

Ronstadt and Riddle also worked together in the 1970s. He arranged three of her albums - What's New, Lush Life and For Sentimental Reasons.

Invitation-only receptions, taking place before each concert, will allow guests to preview some of the extensive memorabilia Riddle donated to the university.

The concerts are Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Holsclaw Hall. Call 621-1162 for more information.
