With Black History Month quickly approaching, members of African American Student Affairs join together in the 12th annual International Sounding of the Drum. This brief ceremony allows students, dignitaries and community leaders to voice their concerns and desires for the future of our society and the world as a whole. The activity will begin at noon on the UA Mall in front of the Memorial Student Union. The Writing Skills Improvement Program brings rhetoric to the table with today's 5 p.m. lecture in Modern Languages Room 204. Kendra Gaines, a UA workshop instructor, will discuss "Understanding Rhetorical Strategies" and help students improve their use of these devices in their essays and general assignments. Centennial Hall opens its doors at 7:30 p.m. to the Odyssey 2001 Dance Concert. Featuring UA dance students and the Tucson Orts Theatre of Dance and Ballet, the program will include the "Carmina Burana," a dance piece created in 1975, and the Classical Symphony set to the music of Prokofiev. Ticket prices range from $8 to $10 and all are general admission. To purchase tickets or to get a schedule of future events please call the Centennial Hall Box Office at 621-3341.

The faculty at the Center for Computing and Information Technology performs a rededication ceremony in honor of their commitment to leading the way in technology. The festivities will begin at noon and will take place in the Computer Center Room 303. Speakers will include Sally Jackson, the vice provost for faculty development and educational technology, and UA Provost George Davis. Are you interested in improving the education level in Tucson? Following the academic trail of "Teach for America," the Building Academic Community Speaker Series presents "K-12 Education: The Good, the Bad, and the Beauty Challenged." UA professors and members of the Flowing Wells School District explain the problems associated with public education.
