Senate committee OKs $10M project
PHOENIX - A Senate panel yesterday gave preliminary funding approval for a joint UA-Pima northwest campus that would become the new home of the AIC.
The proposed 300,000-square-foot campus would eventually accommodate 12,000 students at North Shannon and West Magee Roads, about one mile northwest of Marana.
In addition to housing the Arizona International College, the campus would give permanent space to a joint University of Arizona-Pima Community College "Two Plus Two" teacher training program.
The funding request came in the form of two bills, SBs 1523 and 1297. SB 1523 would appropriate $5.2 million to the UA and $4.77 million to Pima for the construction of the new facilities. SB 1297 would appropriate $800,000 to the UA for operating costs related to the new facility.
Sen. Toni Hellon, R-Tucson, proposed the bills.

Camp Wildcat wins $1,000 grant for casino night
With the help of the DM Federal Credit Union fundraising grant, Camp Wildcat will host a casino night to provide not only entertainment for UA students, but to raise money for the club.
Jeremy Chambers, camp coordinator for Camp Wildcat, accepted the $1,000 grant on behalf of the club at last night's Associated Students Senate meeting.

Kaiser pitches seven innings in Cats win
Rain delays during Arizona baseball games are a rare occurrence but a snow delay is something almost unheard of.
The Wildcats (6-7) had to endure a 10-minute delay yesterday before scoring five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat visiting New Mexico 9-3 yesterday at Sancet Field.
"It was a good job by the boys who battled adverse conditions," UA head coach Jerry Stitt said.

Mandatory tuition fees unreasonable
Recently, UA Cat Tran employees have stated that their wages are too low, and wish their budgets allowed for pay raises.
Some have suggested that mandatory student fees, such as those that are implemented at other universities, ought to be charged to UA students' bursars accounts to help increase Cat Tran's budgets.
While Cat Tran employees may have a legitimate complaint that their pay is too low, creating mandatory student fees is not the solution.
As part of UA's tuition system, every student is required to pay a mandatory KAMP, Arizona Student Association (ASA) and recreation center fee.

Limbeck's pop-rock borders on mainstream sound
For Limbeck, a band based out of California, timing is everything.
"We just seem to be in the right place at the right time," said Patrick Carrie, the band's guitarist and backing vocalist.
Even though the music scene in California is overflowing with bands vying for fame, Limbeck stands out because it teeters on the edge of mainstream music.
"We play pop-rock music but we don't quite sound like everybody else," Carrie said.
It's because of Limbeck's subtle pop sound that the band got the chance to play alongside HomeGrown and the Rx Bandits tonight at Skrappy's, 201 E. Broadway Blvd.
