Defending champs tee-off spring season today in SoCal

The UA women's golf team begins their title defense today.

The Wildcats will open the spring portion of their season today at the TRW Regional Challenge in Palos Verdes, Calif.

The Wildcats are part of a prestigious field that includes 14 of the top 20 teams from last year's NCAA Tournament. Of the 18 teams competing, 15 are currently ranked in the Mastercard/CGF top 25 poll.

Arizona State, Florida, Michigan State, New Mexico, Texas and UCLA are among the schools invited to the tournament.

Arizona will try to continue the success of its fall campaign, where it captured two team and two individual titles. UA finished the fall season - and enters the tournament - ranked No. 2 in the nation.

Freshman Lorena Ochoa - the nation's No. 1 player - leads a UA team that is statistically as strong as any team in school history.

Ochoa is joined by freshman Natalie Gulbis, junior Cristina Baena and sophomore Julia Kraschinski.

Kraschinski will be making her first appearance since winning the national title in the spring. Back problems prevented the sophomore from playing in the fall season.

The three-round tournament is being held at the Palos Verdes Golf Club in Southern California and will conclude with the final round Wednesday.
