Swimming seeks to drown Devils

The Arizona swimming and diving team (No. 7 women, No. 8 men) travel up I-10 this weekend to face in-state and Pac-10 rival Arizona State (No. 10 women, No. 7 men) Saturday in Tempe.

The Arizona women's team is coming off a big win against No. 3 Texas two weeks ago in Tucson. The Wildcats will again be relying on big performances from senior Sarah Tolar and freshman Artemis Daphnis, in the sprint and distance freestyle, respectively. Arizona will also be looking to junior Beth Botsford in the backstroke and sophomore Jessica Wagner in the breaststroke to help solidify Arizona in the final standings.

Arizona State will be led by freshman standout Agnes Kovacs in the breaststroke and intermediate medley. Kovacs is the reigning Olympic gold medalist in the 200-meter breaststroke, and holds the NCAA dual meet record in the same event.

Also swimming well for ASU is All-American senior Sarah Baham, who holds her school's records in the 100- and 200-yard butterfly. In addition to the butterfly, Baham will also be swimming the freestyle events alongside All-American sprinter Claire Hedenskog.

The combination of seniors Kris Souther and Roland Schoeman are going to ASU as the leaders of the men's team. Both swimmers swam well against Texas, winning three individual events, as well as combining with sophomores Eric la Fleur and Byron Jeffers in winning the 400-yard freestyle relay.

"We're very excited," Jeffers said. "They're a tough team and they've got some good guys. We just need to stick together as a team and race as a team."

The Sun Devils will be counting on All-American sophomore Nick Brunelli to come up big against the Wildcats. Brunelli won both the 50- and 100-yard freestyle against Texas, and should match up well against Arizona sprinter Schoeman. In the backstroke, Ahmad Hussein will lead the Sun Devils in the 100 and 200-yard events.

With the postseason approaching, the main goal for the Wildcats in this meet will be to solidify their individual berths in the NCAA tournament. With three swimmers (Schoeman, Souther, and sophomore Juan Veloz) already automatically qualified for Athens, Geo., the men's team will be trying to clinch automatic spots for the rest of the squad, including distance swimmers Aram Kevorkian and Sean Smith and breaststroker Greg Owen.

For the women, Botsford, Tolar, Wagner and freshman Emily Mason have all earned automatic berths at the NCAAs. Senior Jenny Vanker and freshmen Jessica Hayes and Artemis Daphis will all be looking to push themselves into automatic consideration for the tournament.

This is the last regular-season meet of the season for both schools. The two teams will meet again in March in the Pacific 10 Conference tournament in Long Beach, Calif.
