Do your part to bring open-mindedness to the UA. SAFE ZONE, sponsored by UA Residence Life, is a training group providing information about gay, lesbian, biaffectionate and transgendered people and how to give support to anyone who falls into these categories. A training session will be held today from noon to 1:30 p.m., and locations will be given upon registration. The only thing to bring is your open mind; a resource packet will be handed out at the session. For registration and more information, e-mail safezone@life.arizona.edu.
Ebay may be easy and fun, but who can beat a live silent auction? That's what I thought. Now head down to the Arizona State Museum tonight from 6 to 9 to catch the Southwest Indian Art Fair Silent Auction at the museum's north building. Proceeds go directly to the museum. The auction costs $35 for museum members and $40 for non-members. For more information about the art fair, auction or the museum, contact Darlene Lizarraga at 626-8381, e-mail her at darlene@al.arizona.edu or visit the Web site at http://www.statemuseum.arizona.edu.
Now that the sun has warmed the desert Southwest enough to spend time outside at night, the Flandrau Science Center and the Tucson Amateur Astronomy Association invite you to join them on the Mall from 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. to check out the celestial objects hurtling through space during the night. Jupiter and Saturn are the main attractions. For more information, contact Michael Terenzoni at 621-3646, e-mail him at miket@ns.arizona.edu or visit the Web site at http://flandrau.org/astronomy.
It's movie night at Park Student Union. The folks from the University Activities Board know you had a stressful week filled with tests and books, so they brought a comedy to play in the Union's Turquoise Room. "The Big Lebowski," starring Jeff Bridges, begins at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $2.50 and include popcorn and pizza. For more information about the UAB Friday Night Film, contact Diana Ziegler at 621-0768.
Did Godzilla, Gamera or King Kong ever give you nightmares? Maybe they were your personal heroes and you secretly strived for the ability to breathe radioactive fire or knock over large, paper buildings. Well the sociology department has news for you at lunchtime. Join professor Albert Bergesen of the department as he speaks about "The Sociology of Monsters: Embodied Philosophies in the Popular Culture of Japan and the United States." The meeting will be in the Social Sciences building, Room 415, from noon to 1:15 p.m. For more information, contact Beverly Gilbert at 621-3531 or e-mail her at bgilbert@u.arizona.edu.
