The release of Moulin Rouge 2 with all-new music from the original film, serves to re-remind the public that what drives Hollywood, the music industry, politics, UA school administration, the garbage company, Walgreens and contact solution companies is · money.
Not that Moulin Rouge 2 is terrible. The movie and first soundtrack release scored so many style points for their original mix of pop culture kitsch and energy that it would be almost impossible to serve up a second round of "Moulin" music without sounding good. However, the second collection is just that: refrigerator leftovers, like the turkey after Thanksgiving that makes a terrific sandwich, but pales in comparison to the original glorious, gorging feast.
The result is a collection with more instrumental tracks and music sung by Nicole Kidman. Of the instrumentals: "Your Song" (from two different scenes), "Ascension/Nature Boy," and "Closing Credits 'Bolero,'" the furious and fanciful orchestral mix "Bolero" is the strongest and most original instrumental track, worth listening to both in the shower and out. Unfortunately, the increase of Kidman's songs on the second "Moulin" CD remind the listener that while she is a terrific actress, she's only a decent singer.
Highlights include old males (as opposed to sex-pot Madonna) shrilling, "you made her feel shiny and new/she's so fine, and she's mine" in "Like a Virgin." Then there are the songs that anyone not motivated by economics would have left in the movie: "The Pitch (Spectacular Spectacular)" and "The Show Must Go On."
Die-hard fans of "Moulin Rouge" and its soundtrack will gobble up the new tidbits of music, but the rest of the audience should buy the original soundtrack and burn it for a friend.
