Wildcats run over diverse competition in home opener

While most spring breakers enjoyed a week of fun and relaxation, track and field coach Dave Murray's teams were all business.

On Friday, the Wildcats began the two-day Willie Williams Invitational at home in Drachman Stadium, their first home meet of the season.

In a non-scoring meet that also featured numerous junior colleges and several small NCAA schools, Arizona used the meet to determine where they stand on an outdoor level

On the women's side, sophomore Chelsea Powell and freshman Lindsay Scarborough finished first and second, respectively, in the 400m hurdles.

Powell finished in a time of 1:02.43, while Scarborough was just a few seconds back at 1:04.75.

Senior runner Cara Cline was the top Wildcat finisher in the 800m, finishing third with a time of 2:13.61.

In the 500m, junior Kim Bates emerged victorious with a time of 17:36.75 and freshman Andrea Schwartz placed third in the 3,000m steeplechase.

Sophomore Beth Hoge was the top UA finisher in the 1,500m, whose time of 4:37.10 was good enough for second place. Senior Jennifer Burris was close behind in third place, finishing in 4:43.74.

"I ran OK. It wasn't a great time, but it's good for this time of the season," Hoge said. "I run better outdoors, so it was good to have an outdoor meet. Most of our previous meets have been in high altitude and that made it hard for us long distance runners."

Junior Phyllis Brown topped all of her competitors in the pole vault with a winning leap of 11-6 1/2 and was followed closely by freshman Whitney Schauer's third place finish.

For the men, freshman Jeff Hunter's performance in the 400m hurdles was good enough to garner a first place finish, and his time of 52.75 earned him a Pac-10 qualifying spot.

Hunter also placed first in the 110m hurdles with a finishing time of 14.17.

Sophomore Mark Anderson placed second in the 3,000m steeplechase, with a final time of 9:23.28.

Teammates senior Steve Smith and freshman Josh Ludwig were close behind, finishing third and fourth respectively, with times of 9:32.99 and 10:00.84.

The triple jump title was won by Wildcat junior J.R. Harrison, whose leap of 49-8 1/2 topped the rest of the field.

Freshman Sean Shields and senior Rich Legarra earned provisional qualifying marks in the shot put with their second- and third-place finishes, respectively.

"It was good to qualify in the first meet because it takes a little bit of the pressure off," Shields said. "I think we have a lot of good guys and I think we have a pretty good shot at improving throughout the rest of the season."

The Wildcats will begin preparation this week for their second home meet of the season - The Jim Click Shootout - which starts Saturday.
