Unclaimed parking passes available Tuesday

By Kristopher Califano
ARIZONA DAILY WILDCAT

Wednesday September 5, 2001

Nearly 6,000 still remain on list for permits

UA students, staff and faculty still on the waiting list for parking will have a chance to pick up unclaimed permits from the Parking and Transportation Department Tuesday.

The people who received letters stating they have a parking pass have until Monday to pick up the pass at the University Services Building, 888 N. Euclid Ave., said Laura Wilburn, program coordinator for customer relations at the Parking and Transportation Department

"After Sept.10, the lots will be surveyed and the students who are at the top of the waiting list will have a chance to pick up a parking ticket," she said.

There were still 6,000 people on the waiting list as of Aug. 27.

Passes purchased at the beginning of the semester for garages would normally cost $400, and Zone 1 parking would be $185.

The unclaimed passes will be prorated on a daily basis. The cost of each ticket will depend on the lot or garage, and on what day the pass was picked up. The passes received Monday will be prorated less than one day from the Monday cost.

"If you were to claim a pass today for a garage, the cost would be $399. If you were to buy one on the tenth, it would be $392," Wilburn said. "The Zone 1 pass would cost $182. The lots prorate at a slower rate due to a lower overall cost."

She denied any complaints about the prorated prices and said there has been a steady pickup of passes since the semester began.

Joyce Childers, program coordinator for Parking and Transportation enforcement said the unclaimed ticket process has created no snags, however, "we (the Parking and Transportation department) have complaints all the time," she said.

Childers added that motorcycle riders and the disabled do not have to be on the waiting list to receive University of Arizona parking passes.

Motorcyclists who wish to attain a parking pass can pay $60 at the Parking and Transportation department. Disabled parking passes are at normal cost, but the disabled person brings in his vehicle registration to prove that he is disabled.

"All students, faculty and UA staff have to go through the waiting list process, even Parking and Transportation employees. I have to pay $400, too," Childers said.

To claim a parking permit, you must have paid all parking citations, bring a photo ID, vehicle registration, and cash, check, debit or a credit card to pay for the permit.

Students, faculty and staff who wish to get a new permit must bring a CatCard and current permit to the Parking and Transportation Department. If your current permit is stuck to your windshield, you can scrape it off and bring it in. There is a $5 service fee to exchange permits.
