Ruggers aim high against Falcons

After securing third place in the SoCal Conference last weekend with a win over ASU, the men's rugby team will play host to Air Force today in a tune-up for its final regular-season tournament.

The Wildcats enter the 4 p.m. match at Estevan Park after winning the last two meetings against the Falcons.

UA beat Air Force last year in Colorado Springs, 15-10.

"We are approaching (this match) with enthusiasm," head coach Dave Sitton said.

Sitton said the team is looking forward to playing Air Force because they have already qualified for the postseason, and it will be good to see how much the team has improved.

"They are much better than the last four teams we played," Sitton said. "We have a lot of respect for Air Force."

The Wildcats are currently on a four-game winning streak in which they have outscored their opponents 252-54.

Sitton said that, in order to win, the team must take care of the ball. He said the team gave up between 20-25 points last week in turnovers.

"They aren't going to give up the ball," Sitton said. "They are good enough to get the ball and keep it."

Although the Wildcats are already out of the running for a playoff spot, Sitton said he believes it is important to use this game to improve his young team.

"We are only graduating four seniors," Sitton said, "so this will be a good experience for the team next year."

Sitton mentioned that it will take an entire team effort to beat the Falcons, and that's how the team has gone all year.

"They've done things as a team all year," Sitton said. "They've played well as a team and they've struggled as a team."

UA is coming off a 59-14 win over Arizona State last weekend; the win was the Wildcats' final conference game and solidified third place in the SoCal Conference.

The next and final matches for the Wildcats are in the Memorial Invitational at Estevan Park. It will be held the weekend of April 6 and 7 with Arizona, Weber State, Idaho State and San Diego competing in the round-robin tournament.
