Women's water polo to compete in co-ed tournament

The Arizona women's water polo team will travel to Tempe this weekend to compete in the annual Desert Dual Tournament.

In the past, the tournament has had a men's division and a women's division, but since the Arizona State women's team went varsity last year, the women's division at the tournament has been eliminated.

Instead, Arizona's women's team will compete in a co-ed division against teams with five men and two women.

Team president Stacy Mitchell said the team will use the tourney as a warm-up for their next women's competition.

"The competition should be extremely rough, but it should help us prepare for our Southwest Conference Qualifying Tournament," Mitchell said.

The conference qualifiers are April 5-7 in Golden, Colo.

Rule excludes men's volleyball from Utah tournament

The Arizona men's volleyball team did not play as expected in a tournament in Utah this weekend because of a new National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association rule.

The rule prohibits teams with more than two players who have played NCAA, NAIA, or junior college volleyball to participate in the team's normal division, Division I.

An open division was created for teams like the Wildcats, though because Arizona had won the championship the past two years and had several of these players, the rule was primarily aimed at them.

This season, not enough teams fell into that category, so an open division did not exist. The "rule of two" still applies, so Arizona would not be eligible for Division I.

NIRSA made a concession that the Wildcats could split up their team and have one team play Division I and another play Division II. This is in addition to the 'B' team, which already plays in Division III.

The team has been split into three so all are eligible for their respective divisions. Arizona is hoping to be the first team to sweep all three divisions at nationals.

Ultimate frisbee looks forward to postseason

Sunburn Scorch Ultimate, UA's ultimate frisbee team, takes the field April 13 in Tempe for sectionals, hoping to qualify for the regional tournament.

Regionals take place on April 27-28 in Colorado Springs, Colo., and a chance to advance to nationals hangs in the balance. If Sunburn were to advance, it would be the first time in team history.

Prior to sectionals, on April 6-7, a co-ed tournament called Uomo Donna will take place in Tucson.

There are four co-ed Tucson teams in the tournament this year, all trying to become the first Tucson team in 15 years to win Uoma Donna.

Other teams from Arizona as well as teams from California, New Mexico and Colorado are expected to attend.

The tournament is to raise money for the college team. Times and locations are still to be determined.
