Faculty Senate debates next year's possible tuition hikes

Faculty senators disagreed at their meeting yesterday on how to keep a university education affordable for as many people as possible while dealing with rising budget cuts.

The debate centered on a proposal scheduled to come before the Arizona Board of Regents this month that would allow universities more freedom to allocate financial aid.

Most senators who spoke agreed that a financial aid structure that is accessible to low-income students must be coupled with tuition hikes - which the university's top two administrators have already said they will support.

University President Peter Likins said a financial aid plan that allows students to augment federally funded Pell Grants with state-funded grants are a key factor in keeping tuition affordable for poorer students. [Read article]

Wildcat distance runners earn qualifying times in California

The UA men's and women's track and field teams entered last weekend's Stanford Invitational with one goal: to get their six distance runners to meet NCAA or Pacific 10 Conference qualifying standards. [Read article]

Men's swim and dive team 7th at nationals

The Arizona men's swimming and diving team placed seventh in the nation at the 2002 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships in Athens, Ga., over the weekend.

The Texas Longhorns, who had slipped as low as third in national polls entering the meet, pulled off an upset and won their third straight championship. Texas managed to unseat a heavily favored Stanford Cardinal team, which had entered the meet undefeated and with a unanimous No. 1 ranking. [Read article]

U.S. should not be compared to Israel in reference to terrorism

I have been outraged by recent claims from Israeli supporters that Israel is a victim of terrorism just as America has been a victim of terrorism. I have been extremely surprised that many Americans accept such a claim. It is a disservice to the United States of America to be compared with a country such as Israel. Although many people see America's foreign policy as far from perfect, America does not commit crimes against humanity the way that Israel does. The perpetrators of Sept. 11 were not victims of humiliation, the way that the Palestinian people are humiliated everyday. [Read article]
